A Guide to Installing High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Knotted Netting
Vexo | 7th March 2024
Birds, while magnificent in their natural habitats, can become a source of frustration when they intrude into spaces where they’re unwelcome. Whether it’s a garden, agricultural field, or a commercial space, finding a humane and effective solution to deter them is crucial. Our VEXO High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) knotted netting is a versatile and efficient bird deterrent. In this article, we’ll look into the ins and outs of installing HDPE knotted netting, providing a step-by-step guide to ensure you can bid farewell to avian woes without compromising the welfare of our native winged companions.
Understanding HDPE Knotted Netting
Materials You’ll Need
HDPE Knotted Netting: Select a netting with the appropriate mesh size, considering the size of the birds you wish to deter. Opt for a thickness that can withstand the elements and potential bird impacts.
Understand the Building Support Structures: Depending on your installation site, gather poles, posts, or other structures that will serve as the foundation for the netting.
Cable Ties: Choose durable and weather-resistant cable ties to securely fasten the netting to the support structures.
Anchoring Devices Consider the type of fittings needed, depending on whether the cables are to be anchored to masonry or steel beams, or possibly sheet metal. Does the structure have adequate strength to support the tension of the supporting cables? For ground installations, consider using anchors to firmly secure the netting in place. For installations on walls or other structures, use appropriate brackets or mounting hardware.
Scissors or Utility Knife: Have a reliable cutting tool on hand for trimming the netting to the desired size.
Distance Sensor/Measuring Tape: Accurately measure the dimensions of the installation area to ensure you have the right amount of netting.
Ladder: For installations in elevated areas, a sturdy ladder is essential to reach and cover all necessary points. Small boom lifts or scissor lifts maybe needed for projects with greater height.
Gloves and Safety Gear: Ensure you have the necessary protection for your hands and body during the installation process.
Netting Install Guide
Step 1: Anchors – Laying the Foundation
The first crucial step in installing HDPE knotted netting involves securing anchors. There are two types: Corner Attachments and Intermediate Attachments.
Corner Attachments:
– These are placed at the beginning and end of the cable, and every 50 ft along its length.
– Twist eyebolts securely to ensure strength, especially as they bear the most pressure in the system.
– Consider using two multi-purpose brackets to create a corner attachment by aligning the curved ends and ensuring the holes line up.
Intermediate Attachments:
– These attachments hold the cable to the structure and should be installed every foot and a half between corner attachments.
– You can use a drill as a measuring tool to place intermediate attachments accurately.
– Depending on the surface (concrete, wood, or steel), choose net spikes, multi-purpose brackets, or girder clips for attachment, along with hilti pins for steel surfaces.
Step 2: Running the Cable – Creating a Taut Foundation
Once anchors are in place, the next step involves running the cable, also known as straining wire.
Straining Wire:
– Available in galvanized or stainless steel, with thicker cables recommended for netting jobs longer than 50 ft.
– Attach straining wires to the anchors using ferrule.
– Run two ferrule through the end of the cable, loop it through the first corner attachment, and back through the ferrule.
– Use a ratchet tool to crimp the ferrule in place, ensuring they are crimped twice to secure the cable.
– Run the cable through all intermediate attachments, avoiding kinks or catches.
Turnbuckles:
– Attach the cable to a turnbuckle at the end of each side to tighten the wire.
– Ensure the turnbuckle is fully open before securing it with ferules.
– Crimp the ferrule, then rotate the turnbuckle to achieve additional tightening.
Step 3: Hog Ringing – Attaching the Bird Netting
Now that the foundation is in place, it’s time to attach the bird netting using a process called hog ringing.
Unrolling the Netting:
– Bird netting often comes rolled diagonally and may need some stretching to assume its original shape.
Hog Ringing:
– Use a hog ring tool to loop a metal ring around the net and the cable.
– Hog ring the netting onto the turnbuckles as well to prevent bird intrusion.
– Start at one corner, hog ringing in a straight line, and return to the corner to hog ring in the opposite direction.
– Keep the netting straight and even, hog ringing every other square for 3/4 inch netting.
– Trim excess netting and inspect all attachments for strength.
Step 4: Finishing Touches – Enhancing Accessibility
After the netting is securely in place, consider additional touches for convenience and accessibility.
Installing Zippers:
– For easy open and close access, install zippers on the netting.
– Hog ring the zipper’s cloth edges directly to the net for a secure fit.
– Cut the strands of net in between to create a functional opening.
Support Cables:
– Larger netting installations may require support cables to strengthen the overall net structure.
Step 5: Inspect and Make Adjustments
Walk the parameter or use a drone to inspect the entire installation. Look for any areas where the netting may be loose or uneven. Make necessary adjustments to ensure a uniform and effective bird deterrent. Taking the time to thoroughly inspect your work at this stage will save you from potential issues down the line.
Step 6: Regular Maintenance
To ensure the longevity and effectiveness of your bird deterrent system, conduct regular maintenance. Periodically inspect the netting for wear and tear, and promptly replace any damaged sections. By staying proactive, you’ll guarantee that your bird deterrent system remains a reliable and humane solution to avian-related issues.
Pros
Large Areas: One of the biggest advantages of bird netting is its effectiveness over large spaces. Whether it’s agricultural fields, vineyards, or large gardens, bird netting provides extensive coverage, making it an ideal solution for wide-area bird control.
Long-term: Once installed, high-quality bird netting offers long-lasting protection. It’s a durable effective solution that withstands various environmental factors, ensuring prolonged efficacy against bird intrusion.
Environmental Safety: Bird netting is a non-invasive method of bird control. It creates a physical barrier without the need for harmful chemicals, making it a safe choice for both the birds and the environment.
Cons
Installation Challenges: Proper installation of bird netting can be complex, especially over irregularly shaped areas or large expanses. This process often requires careful planning and, in some cases, professional assistance to ensure that the netting is effective.
Potential Ineffectiveness if Improperly Installed: If bird netting is not installed correctly, with gaps or loose areas, it can be ineffective. Birds are adept at exploiting small openings or weaknesses in the netting, which can render the entire installation futile.
Initial Cost and Maintenance: While bird netting is cost-effective in the long run, the initial investment for high-quality netting and professional installation can be substantial. Additionally, periodic maintenance is required to check for damages or wear and ensure the netting remains effective.
Installing High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) knotted netting for bird deterrent provides a humane and eco-friendly solution to avian-related challenges. By carefully selecting the right netting, securing it properly, and conducting regular maintenance, you can create an environment that is both bird-free and respectful of nature’s delicate balance.
